Today we're going old-school HODINKEE. On Friday, I pulled Ben into the studio to chat about what's been going on in the world of HODINKEE - and there's been a lot. We started last week by launching our very first book with Assouline, which is something that's been in the works for the better part of a year and included nearly every member of the HODINKEE editorial team. Then, just two days later, Omega decided to drop the latest James Bond watch, a really special take on the Seamaster 300 that was designed with input from Daniel Craig himself. And, finally, we finished the week getting prepared for the final slate of major auctions for 2019. There are some well-known highlights of course, but we also dive deeper into the catalogs, talking about our personal favorites.

Marc Thorpe

Our main segment this week, though, is my conversation with designer, architect, artist, and international man of mystery Marc Thorpe. His multidisciplinary design practice is a perfect stand-in for his view of the world more broadly. He's a guy who likes to think big ideas, figure out new ways to connect disparate things, and create products and experiences that bring people joy. He's also someone with strong opinions (well earned, I might add) and he's not afraid to share them. If Marc's name sounds familiar, it might be because he's the source of the famous "Show up, make dope shit" quote shared by Ini Archibong when we had him on HODINKEE Radio back in June. We get into that, too, don't worry.

We hope you enjoy Episode 69 of HODINKEE Radio. Check out the show notes below and let us know what you think in the comments.

While Marc rolled into the studio wearing the Patek Philippe 5296G Calatrava with a sector dial that you see in the black-and-white image above, he also came with half-a-dozen other pieces in tow. These represent a pretty good cross-section of his collection, from a Panerai Radiomir Black Seal to a Replica Rolex Explorer to an IWC Portugieser chronograph. Marc likes to research particular watchmakers, figure out what makes them who they are, and then pursue a piece that feels quintessentially "them." Something that couldn't come from anyone else. The pieces here do just that. The one outlier is the small yellow gold fake watch that you see bottom right ?this was passed down to him from his father and represents the origin of his passion for replica watches at large.
